Waddicar Lane, Melling
Waddicar and Melling are two villages now squeezed between the towns of Kirkby and Maghull. Although Kirkby is closer, this area is in Sefton and more closely associated with Maghull, and the old Post Office sign states that the PO is Waddicar, Maghull. The Post Office and village shop still survive.

The hoverfly Eupeodes luniger, Melling
A fairly widespread species of a quite confusing genus; this is a female, with the eyes not touching on the head, and these are easier to identify than males because of the vaguely Y-shaped dark mark between the eyes.

The hoverfly Merodon equestris, Melling
Not one of the more popular hoverflies among gardeners, unlike most hovers which are aphidophagous as larvae, this species is known as the Greater Bulb Fly as the larvae develop in bulbs and corms.
