Detail of 28 Exchange Street East, Liverpool
The building has been much mauled (e.g. what happened to the pink granite column on the left?), and was boarded up, but the ebullient carving has survived. The Building News was not impressed, calling it "showy" and "commonplace". Built as Mason's Building, c1866, to the designs of John Cunningham.

11 Dale Street, Liverpool
A distinguished effort which would not look out of place in Venice. Built for the Queen Assurance Co., 1859, to the designs of J.A. Picton. Arched windows, pierced balconies, and a very pronounced machicolated cornice. Grade II listed. The ground floor was occupied by Ollie & Darsh, cosmetic dentists, and office space above was being advertised. Care must be taken when snapping places like this as the glare from newly-polished teeth can cause temporary blindness.
