Ruins of "Allerton" or Obelisk House
The ruins of "Allerton" or Obelisk House stand in the grounds of Allerton Municipal Golf Course, the photograph shows the putting green to the side. The first house was destroyed by fire as soon as it was built and its replacement, this grand classical residence was completed in 1815. Occupied by the Fletcher family for 104 years, it was bought by Liverpool Corporation in 1923 and the grounds opened as a municipal golf course, the mansion serving as a club house. It was again gutted by fire in 1944 and is now just a scorched ruin beside the present club house.

Obelisk - Allerton Golf Club
This obelisk is to the south east of Allerton Golf Club House. It was erected by the owners of nearby Allerton Hall long before the construction of the house "Allerton", the ruins of which can be seen behind. Originally a prospect at the end of a long avenue of beeches, the sides face the four points of the compass and it was once crowned with a copper ball. It marks the spot exactly 5 miles from Liverpool Town Hall.

Clubhouse, Allerton Municipal Golf Course
Allerton Municipal Golf Course was the second municipal golf course to be opened in Liverpool (the first being at Bowring in 1913), and still one of the earliest municipal golf courses in England. It forms part of the largest expanse of unbroken open green space in the city, an area originally part of the Manor of Allerton. The club house is in the former stable block of Obelisk House also known as Grove House or simply "Allerton".

Entrance to Allerton Golf course
Allerton golf course has an 18 hole 5,500 yard par 67 and a 9 hole 1,841 yard par 34. This municipal course was constructed in the leafy suburbs of Liverpool and the club house is in the stable block of a large manor which was known as "Allerton" (proper name Obelisk House) a grand house which was twice destroyed by fire, in the early 1800's and in 1944. The shell stands forlornly near to the sandstone obelisk from which it took its name. There are other listed buildings in the grounds and it is a very pleasant environment to play, with many mature trees it is also a challenge!
