Compton House, Church Street, Liverpool
By Thomas Haigh & Co., 1865, for store owner J.R. Jeffery. "It is of international significance as an exceptionally early purpose-built department store", wrote Pevsner. Its ornate facade, topped by prominent corner towers, has a Frenchy look (Image]). Grade II listed. Nowadays it is Marks and Spencer.

Frontage of Marks and Spencer, Church Street
This is the impressive central section of Compton House, Church Street, which is the Marks and Spencer department store. This Grade II listed building is dated to 1865/6, however, there is a weathered date above the door that looks later (1891?), and Marks didn't join Spencer until 1894, so with the M&S in the stonework at the top of the building, there must have been later changes to the facade. Within the building there was also a Compton Hotel for many years, which was popular with transatlantic travellers. Somewhat intriguingly there is also a Compton House in nearby School Lane, adjacent to the Bluecoat School.
