Heavy Plant Crossing, Glenrothes.
Giant flowers by a roundabout on the north-western approaches to the new town, with an appropriate red sign beside them. Glenrothes New Town was conceived as a new settlement for former Fife miners, then it took in overspill population from Glasgow and Edinburgh.

The Defenceless One
This impressive 4-metre tall statue, sculpted in 1984 by Rudolf Christian Baisch (who was born in 1903 in Glenrothes' twin town of Böblingen/Württemberg in Germany) was presented to the people of Glenrothes by Böblingen in 1991. Known in German as 'Der Wehrlose' (translated into English as 'The Defenceless One') it is a somewhat disquieting figure, with no arms, a bowed submissive head and ropes around its neck and midriff. (The sculptor lost his workshop and many of his creations in an air raid by 108 RAF Lancaster bombers on Siegen in December 1944 and some believe this work depicts his feelings of helplessness as an air raid victim.)
