Uncultivated land, Fordell
Judging by the dead grass, this was probably not grazed in the previous year, except by the inevitable roe deer.

Coal Hill
As the name suggests there might have been some mining in this community a long time ago. Many disused airshafts suggest underground excavations. Road leads down to Fordell.

Old Farm Buildings, Fordell
These dilapidated buildings are on the site of 'The Square', once part of Fordell Colliery. Most of the old miners' houses are long gone, returned to grassland. These buildings, old though they are, probably post-date the mining days - I recall seeing similar structures on my uncles' farms.

Air Shafts
What looks like the remains of an old building is an air shaft for the Fordell Day Level, a drainage system for the former coal pits in the area. It used to drain into the Fordell burn a few miles south but the Muir Dean open cast mine uncovered it and the water is now pumped from the mine workings. In the distance is another shaft, the more usual round type.
