St Fillan’s Church Gates 1123-2023 Aberdour
St Fillan’s Church is perhaps the oldest church in Scotland. It shows the finest example of simple Norman architecture.
This year it celebrates its 900th anniversary.

St Fillan's Gravestones
A closer look at the collected symbolic stones on the access path at St Fillan's in Aberdour. The stone on the left shows the trade symbol of the Hammersmiths and the heavy tools of a blacksmith. The central stone shows a winged soul looking down on symbols of man's mortality. The right-hand stone shows the tools of a gardener.

St Fillan’s Church Aberdour
This is perhaps the oldest church in Scotland dating from 1123 and in a simple Norman style of architecture. It may even pre-date Aberdour Castle which stands close by. This year it celebrates its 900th anniversary 1123-2023.
The dedication to St Fillan probably came about due to the influence of King Robert the Bruce who gave Aberdour to his friend and supporter Thomas Randolph Earl of Moray. St Fillan was the King’s favourite Saint and is credited with helping the Scots to win the Battle of Bannockburn in 1314.
