St Fillan’s Church Aberdour
This is perhaps the oldest church in Scotland dating from 1123 and in a simple Norman style of architecture. It may even pre-date Aberdour Castle which stands close by. This year it celebrates its 900th anniversary 1123-2023. The dedication to St Fillan probably came about due to the influence of King Robert the Bruce who gave Aberdour to his friend and supporter Thomas Randolph Earl of Moray. St Fillan was the King’s favourite Saint and is credited with helping the Scots to win the Battle of Bannockburn in 1314.
