Kirkcaldy Town House
The original burgh coat of arms and town motto, "Vigilando Munio" which means "I Guard By Watching". The Kirkcaldy Book web site tells us the following about the symbols below the coat of arms:- "When the Town House opened in 1953 there was controversy about stars and crescents appearing in many of the floor designs and also the use of crescents on the decorative lamps in front of the building. Many letters on the subject appeared in local newspapers and a minister was of the opinion that the symbol of Islam was inappropriate in the burgh’s new seat of local government. The stars and crescents actually date back to an alternative coat of arms for Kirkcaldy, recorded in the Lyon Office in 1672. ".
