54 & 56 High Street East, Anstruther Easter
The two nearest houses (this side of the white-gated archway) are nos 54 & 56, and according to the blue plaque were the birthplace in 1784 of Prof William Tennant, writer of the poem "Anster Fair" in 1812, and professor of oriental languages at St Mary's College in St Andrews from 1834. The houses were collectively Category C listed https://britishlistedbuildings.co.uk/200380819-54-and-56-high-street-anstruther-easter-east-neuk-and-landward-ward#.W_mzSNSLTGg in 1972. The listing suggests that they were built around 1800, but if the claim that they were Tennant's birthplace is correct, they must be slightly older than that. Currently a pet shop is trading on the ground floor.
