Portgower
Portgower was a 'planned' village and its unusual feature is that the crofthouses are grouped in one area and the associated croft land is outside the settlement. It is said that this design was based on a French village.

The A9 runs north through Portgower, a small crofting and fishing village (although there has been no fishing here for several decades). Portgower was built in the nineteenth century as a clearance village (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Duke_of_Sutherland#Clearances Wikipedia) by the Duke of Sutherland.
