Masonic Hall, Castle Street, Kirkwall
The oldest freemason lodge in Orkney it is also one of the oldest lodges in Scotland. The official history can be traced back to at least 1st October 1736. The Charter from the Grand Lodge of Scotland is dated 1740. Around 1742 the Tolbooth contained in the attic a masonic hall but that building was demolished in 1849 when the Earl’s Palace was converted to sheriff court and jail. This hall was built, according to the date stone, some years later in 1885.

Kirkwall: the A962 ? Britain?s shortest ?A? road
Looking along Castle Street from its junction with Junction Road (it continues behind us as West Castle Street).
The designation A962 is coterminous with Castle Street at both ends, linking the A963 (foreground) with the A960 at the top of the hill. Officially measured by Orkney Council at 117m in length, this is thus the shortest A-road in Britain.
