The Plough - Friary Meux sign, 93 Kingston Road
The Plough has two of these signs; one at each end of the front of the pub. Friary Meux were formed in 1956 by the merger of two brewing firms. The company went into liquidation in 1961, and the assets were purchased by Allied Brewers. They revived the brand but it, and the Friary Meux beers, were abandoned in 1997, when Allied sold its brewing interests. The two breweries owned by the former Friary Meux concern were closed much earlier, in the 1960's. These Friary Meux signs, with their horseshoe logo, are now increasingly rare. The horseshoe comes from the former Horse Shoe Brewery in London, founded in 1764, and purchased by Sir Henry Meux in 1807. It was demolished long ago. Image
