The Woodman, 238 Barnett Wood Lane
It started life as a beer shop, and for some time in the 19th century, because of a problem locally with drunkenness, it was not allowed to be fully licensed. Those days are long gone, and today this large pub is one of the Ember Inns chain. It offers a wide range of drink and food. Image

The Woodman
Originally a beer shop popular with the navvies building the railway through Ashtead in the 1850s, before this area of Ashtead had been developed. It developed over the year, with the current building dating from the 1830s. On the right is St George's Christian Centre.

War Memorial, Barnett Wood Lane
The War Memorial is on the corner of Barnett Wood Lane and Oakfield Road, by St. George's Church. The inscription reads: "In honoured and thankful memory of the men of this parish who gave their lives in the service of their King and country 1914-1919". Below this is another line, partially obscured by the flowers, but it almost certainly reads: "Their names shall live forevermore". Below is a stone with a list of the names of the dead from the Second World War of 1939-1945. Just above this is an urn in remembrance of an RAF officer, who was killed in 1953. All of these can be seen in:- Image

The flag of Ukraine flutters in the breeze, marking a year since Russia had invaded Ukraine in February 2022. As this image was taken in the month of February, trees were bare for the winter season.
