Wisdom of God, Buckland Road
A grade I listed Anglican church with the unusual dedication to "Jesus Christ the Wisdom of God", which is pretty enough outside but its real treasures are within. Unique in England, its basilica-style interior is filled with genuine marbles and mosaics from ancient Rome and Byzantium.

Lower Kingswood church: window detail
What interested me here was not so much the window as the decorative use of brick and stone. Had the church been built circa 1901, I'd have said that the architect (Sidney Barnsley) had made a cack-handed attempt to imitate the recent work of Lutyens (and others). In fact, the church dates from 1891 - so if any influence can be detected, then it has to be the other way round. It remains rather odd that the patterns started to the left of the window are not continued in 'reflected' form to the right. The church is Grade 1-listed, but that, I suspect, has more to do with the building's Byzantine interior.
