Stoneleigh station, 1970
View southward, towards Epsom: ex-LSWR Waterloo - Raynes Park - Epsom etc. line. This station is a 'recent' addition, opened 17/7/32 in response to suburban expansion. (Of possible interest in showing the station 44 years ago, but it also features my son at age 4 years).

The London & Southampton Railway opened its line from Nine Elms to Southampton in 1838. This soon became the London & South Western Railway. On 4th April 1859, the London & South Western Railway opened a branch to Epsom. This left the main line west of Wimbledon. Ewell West and Worcester Park stations were the only ones between Wimbledon and Epsom which opened on the same day as the line itself. Ten years later there was still no place of any importance between Wimbledon and Epsom and little traffic used the line except on race days. Raynes Park opened in 1871, Motspur Park in 1925, and Stoneleigh was the last one to open - in 1932. This is the view looking in the direction of London. Like Motspur Park, Stoneleigh has a central platform. This may be to do with the fact that these two stations were opened long after the others on the line.
