Monument to Blanche Heriot at Chertsey
This monument is outside Melita House just west of Chertsey Bridge. It remembers Blanche Heriot who, at the time of the Wars of the Roses, knowing her lover was to be executed at curfew, climbed the church tower and hung on to the clapper of the bell until he was reprieved, but she died through her actions. Her courage inspired the ballad ‘Curfew Must Not Ring Tonight’ by the American poet Rose Hardwick Thorpe. For extra reading see https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Blanche_Heriot
