Esher Common. Aseroe rubra
This striking fungus is a native of Australia and the Pacific region, but a colony has established itself on Esher Common, probably brought over in garden imports. Known as the Anemone stinkhorn, Dead Man's Fingers or the Starfish Fungus, it is the only known location in the British Isles. I have been vague with the grid reference as it is very localised within the woods (I know the right tree to look under) and we don't want too many size 12s' trampling the area.

The Anemone stinkhorn (can't say I noticed much of a smell) emerging from its white "egg" The brown sludge in the middle is designed to look and smell like rotting meat to attract flies which will carry its spores.
