Ayr's Town Centre Award
A closer look at the cairn at the far end of the High Street marking Ayr’s 1995 Town Centre Award. Sponsored by Strathclyde Regional Council and the British Council of Shopping Centres, the award recognised traffic calming measures and the general town centre environment. The partial pedestrianisation certainly still works but Ayr is no longer the shopping centre that it was. Like many other towns, the development of out-of-town shopping, the popularity of large supermarkets and the growth of internet business have taken their toll. The credit crunch didn’t help things.
