Looking south on Ayr High Street, May 2000
Looking south on Ayr High Street in May 2000. By then, the traffic management of central Ayr had settled on a 1-way flow northwards on the High Street, restricted to service vehicles and disabled access. This part-pedestrianised space was popular and busy with shoppers. The combined effects of out-of-town superstores, the Credit Crunch, internet shopping and the Covid-19 lockdowns almost certainly will mean that vibrant town centre retail services will never return.
