Kays of Scotland curling stone works
Founded in 1851, the business has always been a wholly owned family business. Kays have the exclusive rights to harvest granite from Ailsa Craig. The qualities that make Ailsa Craig Granite unique are some of the main reasons that Kays of Scotland’s curling stones are the preferred choice around the world. Kays curling stones have been used in every Winter Olympics since 1924.

Kays curling stone
This curling stone tops one of the gateposts at the Barskimming Road works of Kays of Scotland. Kays have the unique rights to quarry granite from Ailsa Craig, and they use it produce curling stones of exceptionally high quality. Kays stones have been used in every Winter Olympic games since 1924, and will be used again in the 2014 event.

Kay's curling stone factory
Only curling stone making factory in Scotland. Granite slabs in foreground were quarried on Ailsa Craig, an island in the Firth of Clyde. The circular holes in the granite slab in the foreground show where the granite for two stones have been removed. The rock from Ailsa Craig is an example of a microgranite.

The village is well provided with a variety of shops. 2 of the three main supermarkets are found here. There is also a family butcher, chemist, photographer, hardware store, sports shop, hair salon, tearoom/baker, greengrocer, a fashion and clothing shop as well as the Post Office and Newsagent.
