Brown?s Institute - Galston
Brown’s Institute in Polwarth Street adjacent to the Muckle Brig was built in 1864 with a gift of money from Miss Martha Brown of Lanfine Estate. Around this time institutes for working men were springing up around the country providing facilities for education and recreation at little or no cost. In Galston it was especially popular with local miners. There was a reading room facilitating classes in reading, writing and arithmetic and occasional lectures in politics. Leisure activities included billiards, darts and cards. Today the building is the Balmoral Knitwear & Mill Shop.

Galston Parish Church
The first church on the site was dedicated to St Peter and was built before the end of the 13th century as one of the five parish churches belonging to the Monastery of Fail. The present church was built 1808-09 during the ministry of the Rev. George Smith (1778-1823) the great grandfather of Robert Louis Stevenston. He was also immortalised by figuring in three poems of Robert Burns "The Holy Fair," "The Twa Herds" and "The Kirk's Alarm."
