The Marine Biological Research Station
Originally founded in the 19th century on a barge floating off the nearby Farland Point, the research station moved onto land in one half of these buildings, then outgrew that, which meant that the other half had to be built - hence the differences in the stonework. The white building in the background is a hostel, used by the research station.

Save our Marine Station sign
The University Marine Biological Station Millport was run by the University of London until the end of 2013. At the time the photograph was taken, the future was unclear for the Marine Station - hence the sign. The facility has now been taken over by the Field Studies Council, so its future seems secure, at least in the short term.
