The inscription reads: "DEDICATED TO THE OFFICERS AND MEN OF THE 1ST SPECIAL AIR SERVICE REGIMENT STATIONED AT DARVEL 1944 COMMANDING OFFICER Lt. Col. R. B. MAYNE D.S.O. (3 BARS) LEGION D’HONNEUR, CROIX DE GUERRE “COL PADDY” WE ARE THE PILGRIMS, MASTERS" Paddy Mayne was the original Second-in-Command of the regiment. He cultivated a reputation for fearless leadership and the use of pioneering tactics.
