Wall Panel at Irvine Old Parish Church
The 16th century Protestant Reformers banned church burials and gravestones but attitudes gradually softened with the passage of time. The first accepted stones were panels in churchyard walls or on the outside of the actual church walls. The small panel shows the death of two people, RC in 1656 and MF in 1651, with a family crest. The large panel shows the original sandstone framing, with a slightly altered family crest at the top and a coffin containing bones and a skull at the bottom. The inside panel has been replaced in granite. This records the burial of William Cunningham, Rector of Irvine Grammar School, who died on August 17th 1766.
