Layby and AA Box 631 at Brachla
The first AA telephone boxes were put up in 1912, initially as shelters for patrols. By 1920 there were 61 boxes and members had a special key to open them; members could make local calls free of charge. In their heyday there were almost 1,000 roadside boxes; by the early 1960s no more traditional boxes were being built and the AA decommissioned all of its remaining roadside phones in 2002 due to the widespread use of mobile phones. Today, there are only 19 remaining AA wooden sentry boxes on public roads (listed at http://www.theaa.com/about-us/aa-history/timeline#aatelephoneboxes). This box, at the side of the A82 at Brachla, is of the 1956 post-war pattern. It is one of 7 remaining AA sentry boxes in Scotland. It is designated by Historic Scotland as a Category B listed building (http://www.britishlistedbuildings.co.uk/200396808-brachla-aa-sentry-box-no-631-inverness-and-bona#.WOyZwIWcGUk British Listed Buildings).
