Fields at Burgie
Notice the curious building, like a classical temple, built into the far wall of the field. This is the portico of the old house, removed when the house was enlarged in 1912 and re-erected in the grounds of the old castle.

Drive at Burgie Castle
The map shows that the access to the tower house appears to run uphill from the former walled garden and then turns sharply towards the tower. This is the lower part of the drive, and continuing in the line of the drive is the classical portico of the original house, removed in 1912 and built into the wall surrounding the former garden.

Burgie Castle
Only this six-storey tower remains of the original large Z-plan castle. It looks in reasonable repair, though the windows have all been boarded up since 1991 when Image] was taken. The castle was finished in 1602 by Alexander Dunbar, lay Dean of Moray. He obtained the lands from his brother-in-law Walter Reid, last Abbot of Kinloss Abbey, in 1566. The fireplace lintel is carved with the initials A D, K R and R D, presumably for Alexander Dunbar, his wife Katherine Reid and son Robert Dunbar.

Burgie Castle
See Image] for brief historical details. Since that was taken, the base of the tower has been shored up with scaffolding, with the assistance of Historic Scotland.

Burgie Castle
From this angle, the reason for the scaffolding is apparent. there are cracks in the masonry above the lowest window. A sad state of affairs, but the expense of rebuilding would be prohibitive. Brief historical details at Image]
