George V postbox, Kenneth Street
This old postbox, which dates from somewhere between 1910 and 1936, is on the corner of Perceval Road and Kenneth Street. The street which can be seen in the background leading off Kenneth Street, is Celt Street. New postboxes in Scotland have not displayed a royal cipher for several decades. This is because of controversy over the present sovereign's EIIR cipher. Although the Queen is Elizabeth II in England and Wales, she is, strictly speaking, Elizabeth I in Scotland. Queen Elizabeth the First (of England and Wales) was never Queen of Scotland. To satisfy these objections, when new postboxes were installed they showed a crown, but no royal cipher. This postbox is number IV3 34. Last collection is 5.45 pm Monday to Friday, and 11 am on Saturday. The box can be seen in this view:- Image
