Let it snow, let it snow, let it snow!
Like so many Chinese sky lanterns, snow flakes are held in suspension in the air over the prospect of the river Lossie, the Seatown and the East Beach.

The scarlet petals of Common Poppy sometimes have a black blotch

with a flattened lid.

The Goosander (Mergus merganser)
It has just captured a flounder in the canal. This bird is a member of the "sawbill" family and if you look closely you will see the serrations of his bill. It struggled with this fish for several minutes, having difficulty swallowing it because of its flatness.

The Grey Heron (Ardea cinerea)
Patience is certainly a virtue with this bird who will stand statue-like for long periods of time, who will stalk and prey on fish, frogs, toads, rats and voles and then strike lightning-fast on its victims.

Wild Rose Hips
With just one late flower. I can't be sure exactly which species this is, but it's probably one of the subspecies of Rosa caesia, the Northern Dog Rose.

Juvenile Herring Gull (Larus argentatus)
This youngster was so intent on begging its parent to feed it that it allowed me to get quite close before flying off.
