The Oakwood, 2009
Compare this view with Image The petrol pumps and the range of low motel rooms have gone, and a slightly incongruous extension has been added at the far end of the ground floor, replacing the central steps and entrance. The new set of steps at the near end is a fire exit. The Oakwood, now a category B listed building, has had a chequered recent history. After it ceased to have sleeping accommodation, it was a restaurant for a time, then an antique shop. It has lain unoccupied for some time, but there are signs that work is again being done on it. Update 2010. The Oakwood is now a showroom of kitchen and bathroom fittings. See Image

The Oakwood to the west of Elgin, Morayshire.
Reputed to one of the first if not the first "motel" in Britain the Oakwood has known mixed fortunes and now stands empty awaiting some sort of reprieve.

Oakwood Rustic Motel, about 1959
The Oakwood is said to owe its existence to the law which provided for the sale of alcohol on Sundays only to 'bona fide' travellers, and defined a 'bona fide traveller' as someone who had travelled at least two miles. The Oakwood is two miles from the centre of Elgin. It was built in 1932 in a Canadian rustic style by Dougal and Andrew Duncan. The low building at the far side is the row of motel-style bedrooms with parking on the doorstep of each room. For a view 50 years on see Image
