Millburn Academy
Millburn Academy is a six year secondary school serving the area of Inverness east of the River Ness and the rural areas to the south of the city. The school first opened in 1961 as Millburn Junior Secondary School. In 1976 the school name was changed to Millburn Academy (as opposed to Millburn High School) after School Council pressure on the Education Committee. In January 2007 construction work began on the building of the new Millburn Academy, which opened on November 3rd 2008. The new Millburn Academy was built on the old school’s playing fields. The ground which the old school previously occupied will become the new playing fields. The £26 million state of the art building has a range of classrooms with specialist facilities, an integral base for children with additional support needs, a four court games hall, a gymnasium, dance studio, a library and a performance venue with bleacher seating. (Information from school website: http://www.millburnacademy.co.uk/ ) The former building: Image

Millburn Distillery
A Mr Welsh allegedly established the Millburn in 1807, located on the eastern side of Inverness on the banks of the Mill Burn. At some point in the mid 1800s, David Rose a local corn merchant was operating the property as a mill. The distillery was renovated in 1876 and sold to A Haig & Co in 1892. Alfred Bernard described the distillery, in his 1887 tour, as “The distillery is about 1 mile from the town on the old Roman Road, that leads to Fort George, and it is situated under the brow of a steep hill, which faces the sea. It has a very handsome appearance and is built principally of stone. The open cooperage, generally an unsightly building is here beautifully with enclosed trellis work, painted a rich green.” After a number of changes in ownership the distillery was acquired by Booth's (Gin) Distillery Ltd. in 1921. The following year they had to rebuild Millburn after a serious fire. Acquired by DCL in 1937 then transferred to SMD control in 1942. DCL mothballed the distillery in 1985. In 1988 the site was sold for property development. The site is now host to a Beefeater restaurant & pub called “The Auld Distillery” on Millburn Road. (Information from whiskymerchants.co.uk).

The Auld Distillery from Diriebught Road
The building in the background is the former Millburn Distillery, which is now a pub/restaurant, with a Premier Inn hotel next door. (More about the distillery here: Image]). The picture is taken from the junction of Millburn Road and Diriebught Road. The latter road name must challenge the spelling and pronunciation skills of non-locals.
