The Tattingstone Wonder
The local squire decided he didn't like the look of some cottages when viewed from his seat, so had built a sham church to disguise them. The tower has only three sides, and the trick is revealed when viewed from the other side. The churchification dates from about 1790, a grade II*(star) listed building.

Tattingstone Wonder - front
This is really a group of cottages disguised as a church on one side as the local squire of nearby Tattingstone Place in the late eighteen hundreds didn't like looking out on some cottages from his estate.

The Tattingstone Wonder, from the south east
Look first at the other photo of the Tattingstone Wonder and now this one. What do you see? It isn't a church after all! Look at that tower: only three sides! Look at the roof: a skylight and a chimney in the middle of the pitch. It's a kind of folly: a house disguised as a church - a wonder indeed!
