Peninsula Community Recycling Centre, Chelmondiston
From press release: Chelmondiston Household Waste Recycling Centre saved The ‘Peninsula Community Recycling Centre’ will open on Thursday 4 August in direct replacement of Chelmondiston Household Waste Recycling Centre which is due to close on Sunday 31 July. It is now the second centre in Suffolk to be run by groups external to the county council, thanks to the efforts of those living on the Shotley peninsula. The site was one of seven earmarked for closure, as part of essential budget savings at Suffolk County Council. Now parish councils on the peninsula are working with local firm ‘Collins Skip Hire’ to keep the site open. “People told us they would rather pay than lose their site, but unfortunately this wasn’t an option open to us as legally we are not allowed to charge people to use the sites. “Others however, can, so we have worked hard with the parish councils on the Shotley Peninsula to keep a local service which complements our network of other sites – giving people options for recycling and disposing of their waste.” Opening hours will be 9am to 4.30pm on Mondays, Thursdays, Fridays and Saturdays and 10am to 4pm on Sundays. “Collins will operate the site on a trial basis, while we seek to understand the community appetite for the new scheme and look at other options for cutting costs and waste.”
