Offton St Mary?s church
Offton is said to be a stronghold, if not the stronghold, of the Saxon King Offa (757 - 796). So the church may well have deeper roots than can be seen today. The present building has Norman origins. A monument opposite the south door to Sarah (and John) Wyatt with the superb carving. Through the 14th century, half-timbered porch is the 12th century south door. The tower also dates from the 14th century and has a later crenellated parapet. The roof to the nave has braced tie-beams and king-posts to the roof. There is some rare 15th century glass in the south-east nave window. The 14th century font is a traditional type and among other floral decoration is a depiction of St Edmund’s crown, pierced with arrows. The pulpit and holy table are both of the Stuart period.

Memorial at Offton to Sarah Wyard
The striking monument was commissioned by John Wyard following his wife’s death in a riding accident. A horse, standing beside a small bush, looks down at the now covered figure of Sarah on the ground, and accompanied by a weeping woman, probably her daughter Amy, who was twenty-one at the time of her mother’s death. The scene would originally have been painted and clearer to envisage; still some remnants of paint remain. The memorial is just a couple of yards distant from the south porch of St. Mary's church.
