Hintlesham St Nicholas?s church
The 15th c. flint embattled tower appears short and stumpy, with only three stages and the clerestory adding to the illusion. The south porch is half-timbered and open to the weather. The church is cement-rendered and the walls are looking shabby. Inside it is bright and the painting of Saint Christopher draws your attention. The 13th c. pier arcades with moulded capitals are the chief feature of the church. On the south wall of the chancel is a slate monument of 1558 to members of the Timpley or Timperley family. Another is carved in alabaster. Behind the Stuart holy table the remains of the rood loft can be seen. The beam across the chancel arch rests upon carved heads. Havelock Ellis, author of ‘The Psychology of Sex’, died here in 1939.
