Milden St Peter?s church
It is no surprise to learn that this little church is of Norman origin. There is a Norman doorway to pass through, and a lancet window in the south chancel wall. The square font is 12th century and is standing on four pillars, none of which matches its counterpart. The roof has large tie-beams and king-posts supporting it. A few steel tie-rods have since been added just to be on the safe side. The pulpit is Stuart and professionally made whereas the benches are rough-hewn DIY jobs and bear the church wardens’ names and the date 1685. The surprise here is the effigy to James Alington (1626) who is resting his head on a book, rather than a dog or deer, as so many are. Obviously a man of learning. A past rector, William Burkitt took after him for he is remembered for teaching the children of the poor to read.

This little Norman church once had a west tower, but it was found to be unsafe and it was demolished in 1827.
