The heraldic crest of Ipswich
The crest, originally just a shield was adopted during the reign of Edward III. The helm with crest and mantling was added in 1561. The two 'Neptunes horses' were incorporated as supporters at the same time.
The ship supported by a lion represents the Mediaeval Seal of Ipswich.
The legend on the scroll reads 'Munia civitatus decus civium'. Translates from the Latin to 'The functions of the city honors its citizens'
