A section of Fore Street (the A1156), looking towards Star Lane. This street runs parallel with and north of Neptune Quay at the side of the marina. Edith Maud Cook (1878-1910) was born at 90, Fore Street in the house with the lamp over the door. She was an early British parachutist, balloonist and aviatrix who was reputed to have made over 300 parachute jumps in a career spanning more than 10 years. Possibly a pupil at the Blériot flying school and at Claude Grahame-White's school at Pau, Pyrénées-Atlantiques in c.1909 and according to journals of the day she became the first British woman to pilot a plane. She died however, from injuries sustained following a jump from a balloon over Coventry.
