Locals report that public hangings used to take place on a triangular plot of land in front of the former gaol at this road junction, i.e. St Helen's Street with Orchard Street (ahead). Records show that the last public hanging was of a certain John Ducker on 14 April 1863 when his execution took place in the prison archway on St Helen's Street. The pub opposite is The County of Suffolk Hotel.

Ipswich IP4, Suffolk.
Part of the former County Hall building occupying the corner formed by St Helen's Street - on the left - and Bond Street on the right. It was built in 1836-37 to a design by W. McIntosh Brooks. In a former life it also served as the local gaol and law court. In 1906 it was extended and became the offices of Ipswich Corporation and it finally served as the headquarters of East Suffolk County Council until March 2004. It was in this court that Mrs Wallace Simpson was granted the decree nisi from her first husband, freeing her to marry the future king following his abdication from the English throne in 1936. This Grade II-listed building is currently empty and is considered to be in a very poor state of repair internally.
