I do not know the name of this road - it is simply marked "Private road". This area was part of a country estate before the town expanded here, with houses, barracks, and an airfield.

All Over Beauty in West Road, Bury St. Edmunds, Suffolk closed today as it being Christmas Day 2013.

This garage has an unusual clock tower - a shame the clock does not work. Having a forecourt entrance on a T-junction with a mini roundabout does create a certain level of confusion. In the 1930s this garage provided the fuel for the nearby municipal airport at Westley Airfield beside Newmarket Road - a car would be dispatched with piles of petrol cans.

I think this hole started out as a simple doorway, but lack of maintenance plus vandalism gradually opened it up. It has now been made official. Given that the barracks were built in 1878 I don't think the arrow slits were functional!

As noted in the picture showing the view west from this same point Image, this private road has no displayed name. Note that this eastern half has a tarmac surface, unlike the western part. The road runs parallel to Newmarket Road, just separated by a hedge and small bank. Over the trees at the end we can see the turret on top of the garage on the corner. In the 1930s this functioned not only for cars but also for refuelling aircraft on the airfield established just west of here. To my surprise the clock on the turret was showing the correct time, which it has not done for years.
