The former Corn Exchange in Bury St Edmunds ,which is Grade II listed, was designed by Ellis & Woodward and built at a cost of £7,000. It opened for business in July 1862. In 1969 a floor was inserted in the hall and the ground floor became shops. Today the upper floor is a Wetherspoons pub.

This is a photograph of the Nutshell Public House Bury St Edmunds. Reputed to be the smallest pub in Britain. What you see in the photo is the full length of the single bar, the bar is approximately 2 metres wide. A sign in the Pub states 'Coach Parties welcome, of no more than 2 persons'! The Landlord told me that he only serves small beer & shorts!

A colonnade on the north side of the Corn Exchange, now offices, was originally part of the town Shambles, which occupied 3 sides of the site on which the exchange is built. The impressive Corn Exchange with its Ionic portico with pediment, was built in 1862 replacing an earlier exchange that had proved to be too small. Refurbished in 2012, the main area of the exchange is now a public house and restaurant. Cornhill incorporates the market areas set out in the 12th century where twice weekly markets are held, Buttermarket with The Traverse extend to the south connecting with Abbeygate Street and Guildhall Street. The area has some of the town’s finest and most important buildings. Bury St Edmunds is a market town which is the cultural and retail centre for West Suffolk and is known for brewing (Greene King) and sugar (British Sugar). There is scattered evidence of earlier activity but essentially Bury St Edmunds began as one of the royal boroughs of the Saxons and a monastery was founded which became the burial place of King Edmund. A new Benedictine abbey was built in 1020 which became rich and powerful and the town was laid out on a grid pattern by Abbot Baldwin. After the dissolution the abbey became ruinous. A new church, later the cathedral, was begun in the early 16th century.
