Hessett St Ethelbert?s church
Here is an interesting little church. In the churchyard you will find the base of a 15th c. cross and part of the upright, still in the original position. A rarity indeed. The tower is beautifully proportioned and is decorated from its pierced parapet to the chequer-work around the base. The fine 15th c. clerestory and porch also have pierced parapets and it all fits together magnificently. An inscription tells the viewer more. Inside the church, more treats await the visitor. Within the porch is the base of a stoup; the late 14th c. font is carved from top to bottom and sits on an octagonal base with an inscription. The 15th c. screen has been repainted, and the wall paintings carefully preserved. The Seven Deadly Sins are represented in the form of a tree. The iron-bound chest is huge. Charles the II’s Royal Arms hang above it.
