Tuddenham St Mary?s church
I admired the abundance of wild flowers in the churchyard more than the appearance of the church, I’m afraid. The fabric is crumbling and lacks the maintenance it deserves. It has stood here since the 14th century and the clerestory was added a century later. Inside the nave is a lovely hammerbeam and arch-braced roof. The semi-octagonal font is unusual in that it has a bevel round the top of the bowl and tapers towards the bottom. It stands on a square shaft with an engaged column at each corner. The rood loft stairs disappear into the chancel arch just behind the pulpit. Set into the north wall is an old tomb, probably used as an Easter sepulchre. The church is large and empty and is devoid of character or interest. It was at one time a fine church, but alas, no more.
