Cut-off Channel, near Lakenheath
The Cut-off Channel links the River Lark near Mildenhall, with the tidal river Great Ouse at Denver Sluice, via the Relief Channel. At times of flood it takes waters from the Lark, Little Ouse and Wissey rivers. At other times it is a quiet, weed-infested and near-stagnant waterway that skirts the eastern edge of the Fens. The channel was completed in 1964.

Cut-Off Channel near Lakenheath
The Cut-Off Channel follows the eastern edge of the Fens. Here it marks a fairly sharp boundary between the fertile, peaty Fens and the sandier Brecks. This isn't a change in the underlying sediments but the Fens are lower and flooded, creating a peat layer above the mostly undisturbed sand and gravel. In the Brecks the sand and gravel deposits haven't been covered and have been worked into the soil. In some areas it is infertile heathland or woodland while in other areas it is excellent for root vegetables.

Cut-off Channel, near Lakenheath
The Cut-off Channel crosses Grime Fen, as viewed from Highbridge Gravel Drove. This drainage channel takes flood waters from the Lark, Little Ouse and Wissey rivers. The channel was completed in 1964.
