Caucasian scabious (Scabiosa caucasica)
As the name indicates, this plant is native to the Caucasus, north-eastern Turkey and northern Iran. It grows up to 60cm (24 in) high and has pincushion-shaped buds which open to reveal pale blue or lavender-coloured flower heads. The plant is very attractive to bees and other pollinating insects. Numerous cultivars have been developed for garden use, in shades of red, purple, pink, blue and white.
