King's House, Thetford
Flagpoles have been used to suspend Christmas decorations outside this handsome 18th century building, opposite the Bell Inn. King's House is now occupied by the offices of the town council and by the registrar's office. Note also the statue of Thomas Paine.

Thetford buildings [55]
King's House was built circa 1762 and incorporates parts of an earlier structure which King James I acquired in 1609 as a hunting lodge. The house was converted to use as municipal offices in 1950 and was refurbished in 1993. Built in flint and re-used ashlar with a gault brick front with red brick dressings. The building is roofed with three parallel, fairly steeply pitched slated roofs. Some fine internal original features remain. There is a detailed history of the house at: https://www.thetfordtowncouncil.gov.uk/history/kings-house/ Listed, grade II, with details at: https://historicengland.org.uk/listing/the-list/list-entry/1195936
Once the ancient capital of East Anglia, Thetford is a market town established at a crossing of the River Little Ouse. A major centre of Boudica’s Iceni tribe with an Iron Age fort. Later came a Norman castle and an important priory. Thetford is the birthplace of 18th century radical Thomas Paine, whose thinking encouraged American independence and the abolition of slavery. After World War II, Thetford became an "overspill town", taking people from London.
