Hockham Magna village sign
A double sided sign with one side dedicated to remembering the Hockham Magna Horn Fair where itinerant sellers of heather and trinkets also gathered. The reverse shows Joseph Ashton, commonly called Tinker Joe, who died in this parish in 1881, aged 112. He’s shown with pots and pans attached to a cord over his shoulder, his horse and cart wait patiently between him and his(?) thatched cottage. Wildlife is represented by a reddish grey squirrel, a grey partridge and a rabbit. Perhaps the partridge isn’t just any old partridge, but a representative of Henry Thomas Partridge, Esq., J.P. to whom much of the parish belonged. The flora consists of various greenery including cowslips, broom and holly.
