Silent stands the signalbox - Thetford, Norfolk
Taken on the day of an English Heritage event at the Gorse Industrial Estate, Barnham formerly the RAF Barnham nuclear bomb store, Thetford signalbox now stands unused after its closure. It is one of a number of signalboxes which have been listed Grade II listed by Historic England, formerly English Heritage. After a day of oppressive heat and a couple of cancelled trains I and fellow passengers caught a train, as the sky grew darker and darker, to Ely. Here we were greeted by torrential rain and an announcement "During this period of hot weather you are advised to carry a bottle of water with you". The 6.15 pm train to Birmingham arrived but somewhere between Manea and March we came to a halt and did not move again until 8.15 pm. Time taken not available.

Railway at Thetford
Seen from the station footbridge, looking towards Ely. Co-acting semaphore signal arms like these are a rarity nowadays - they are provided because at different points on the approach to the signal the driver's view of one or other of the arms is obscured.

Thetford Signal Box
Thetford was a bit of afterthought on the Breckland line, at first the Norwich to Brandon Railway company were going to build right past and construct a small branch line, works even started. However the line did reach Thetford and now it is a major station.
