Diss Town Sign
A double sided sign overlooking Diss Mere is represented by the shield which atops the sign. Thankfully each face has a small plaque with the explanation of the image. On the south face “John Skelton, Rector of Diss (1504 - 1529) Poet Laureate, and Tutor to the young Prince Henry (Later Henry VIII) gives instruction to the prince and his sisters Margaret and Mary.” On the North face “Matilda, daughter of Robert Fitz-Walter (The Valiant) Lord of the Manor of Diss, Rejected the advances of King John. The angry King sent a messenger with a poisoned potched egg- whereof she died 1213.” The four lower panels with the roundels represent Diss Mere, weaving, farming and a 17th century Diss farthing. https://www.geograph.org.uk/photo/6686456
