Metfield St John the Baptist?s church
The tower of the church is 14th century with a seated figure keeping watch at each corner above the crenellated parapet. The clock, unusually, is placed above the apex of the nave roof facing the street to the east. The porch is 15th century with stone panels and Lierne-vault ceiling and has a parvise above. Both nave and chancel roofs are arch-braced, but the chancel is boarded and has the Metfield imp on one of the roof bosses. The font is 15th century octagonal typical East Anglian type on a square base, and still bears traces of its mediaeval paint. The western gallery houses the organ, the latest of which was installed in 1953. The rood stairs are still open but lead nowhere. The lower panels of the rood screen are now re-sited at the west end of the nave. The piscina is early 14th century. In the base of the tower is housed the 1719 clock mechanism.
