In memory of William Herbert Dundonald Wilson
An elaborate headstone erected by the officers & ship's company of H.M.S. Royal Oak, "Grand Fleet" in memory of 18 year old William Herbert Dundonald WILSON who was accidentally killed when he fell from a height onto the deck on April 17th 1918. Launched in 1914 and completed in 1916, Royal Oak was a 'Revenge Class' battleship which first saw combat at the Battle of Jutland. On 14 October 1939, Royal Oak was anchored at Scapa Flow in Orkney, Scotland, when she was torpedoed by the German submarine U-47 with the loss of 833, three quarters of her complement.
